This Is About Changing Majors and Why That Is Okay.

It was a hot August day, and I was stuck in a classroom. My very first day of college, away from home, independent, and honestly happy, I was sitting in a junior level psychology class. You can imagine my excitement as I told everyone from home, "Yeah, I'm a psychology major and I wanna be a psychologist." Little did I know the work that would be required of me.

This narrative is present in a lot of the stories freshman share with one another. I am now a sophomore who has changed his major three times, I went from psychology, to education, and now I am at mass media. I have always been committed to letting my friends know I am very indecisive when it comes to most things in life, except my careers. Believe it or not, I am a futurist who always wants to know the next step in any plan. So this was a common theme when I would change my major, I had to have a 30-year plan of what I wanted to happen to me, and how I was gonna make it happen. Changing your major is a common thing, and this article proves just that!

When I wanted to be a psychologist I had to map out my options for graduate school, and then where I would work with, who my clientele would be in regards to my specialty. When I wanted to be an educator, I had to make a plan where I ended up as the commissioner of education in Kansas. These large-scale plans were my cocoons when it came to my own fear of the unknown, now that I am a mass media major. I have literally zero ideas what I am going to do with this degree.

Sounds awesome right? Well trust me, it is. Almost liberating. The stress of having to follow my own track weighed on me, having to always think ahead, and not enjoying present moments in my life. So I urge anyone considering changing majors, do it. At least google new majors that sound mildly interesting, don't think of the long run, think of the current state. "Will you enjoy what you are learning?" Is the best question to ask your self. Will you really enjoy learning about math, if yes, then congrats! You have found a passion you can transform into a career.
